4 Tips for Tackling Workplace Conflicts

Workplace conflict can be very disruptive. Not only can it cause a business to function less effectively, but it can also create a lot of tension and drama between employees. So, it is better to be able to resolve workplace conflict before it gets out of control and causes larger problems. Here are some great tips for tackling workplace conflicts.

1. Timing

If you are having a problem with a coworker, a boss, or an employee whom you supervise, timing is key if you are thinking about confronting the person. Stressful times, or times when the office is very busy are generally not a great time to try to resolve conflict. Instead, choose a time when things are less busy. People will tend to respond better to conflict resolution attempts if they are not extremely stressed due to frantic business activity.

2. Calm language

In order to effectively communicate during times of workplace conflict, it is key to use calm language. This means phrasing your speech in such a way that you do not put the other person on the defensive. So, instead of just accusing the person of doing A, B, and C wrong, try to instead say something like, “I have noticed that we seem to be having some issues with X, would it be possible to discuss some new solutions for these things?” If you are very calm, then the other person will be a lot more likely to stay calm.

3. Suggestion box

The great thing about suggestion boxes is that they allow people to address conflict anonymously. So, if one person is having a problem with another person, he or she can just bring this up in a note dropped into a suggestion box. Then, a manager can deal with the conflict instead of employees having to deal directly with one another. This can help to eliminate a lot of issues.

4. Human resources

Human resources professionals are often trained in conflict resolution. This means that if you are having an issue with employee conflicts, then a human resources professional may be the perfect person to go to for help. This is especially true if the person you are having an issue with is a manager or someone who is above you in the corporate hierarchy. Having a human resources professional assist you with employee conflicts can also be helpful because oftentimes human resources personnel have the power to hold managers accountable in ways that most other employees do not. So, they can make sure that your conflict receives the proper attention that it deserves.
