If your employee is already disgruntled and unhappy, then berating or disciplining him or her or in front of other employees is not going to help the situation. Instead, it will probably make the person more disgruntled and upset. This is because no one likes to be embarrassed publicly.

Instead, when you need to have a disciplinary discussion with this person, do it in a private setting where he or she will not experience heightened embarrassment. Treat the person with respect, and get your points across clearly.

2. Get to the root of the issue

If you can figure out why the person is disgruntled, then there may actually be a simple situation. In fact, in many cases, an employee may be upset about something that is easy to solve. For example, the person may be upset that his or her parking spot is too far away. Or, he or she may be having a basic issue with a coworker. Whatever the case may be, if you can talk with the person, and get to the heart of the issue, you may find the solution is easier than you thought.

3. Improve your employees’ work experience

If you can make small improvements to your employees’ work experience, then the number of disgruntled employees you have could drop significantly. For example, if you could give them some free snacks, or even an extra paid day off or two per year, this could go a long way. If you don’t have a casual dress day every once in a while, then you could also try that. Anything that lightens the mood and makes work more enjoyable for your employees could be very helpful.

4. Get help from HR

Human resources professionals are skilled at dealing with issues such as managing unhappy employees. They are also likely to have conflict resolution training. So, if you are struggling to manage a disgruntled employee, it may be a good idea to get advice from human resources. Human resources can give you ideas to help you. They can also meet with the person separately to try to help. Further, human resources can set up a supervised meeting between you and your disgruntled employee to try to resolve the conflict. All of these things can be very helpful and beneficial.
