How to Effectively Discipline Employees

Disciplining employees effectively is crucial for making sure that a certain code of conduct is upheld in your workplace. This is because, every now and then, an employee will do something that is unacceptable or inappropriate. If you do not discipline him or her, then it sends the message that you will tolerate bad behavior. This is not good. The better option is simply disciplining employees effectively. Here are some great tips for how to do this.

1. Address the issue as a first step

If the issue is not that serious, and if it is a first time offense, then you should not be too stern. You should simply speak with the employee and let him or her know that what he or she is doing is a problem. Then tell him or her that you would like his or her behavior to change. You can also let the person know that negative consequences will follow if he or she continues the bad behavior.

2. Give a written warning

If the person continues to participate in poor behavior while he or she is on the job, then you can give him or her a written warning. This is a slightly more formal and serious way to warn them that what they are doing is not okay. It also documents the issue which could be important in case the employee ends up getting fired, and sues for wrongful termination.

3. Give a final warning

This should only be done if you have already taken the first two steps and if the problem has not been resolved. In the final warning, you should let the person know that they are in danger of being terminated. This also should be done in writing. However, you can speak to the person as well.

4. Suspend the person

A suspension period is the last step before termination. You should do this if you still want to retain the employee, but he or she has not taken any of the other steps seriously. You can also put the person on probation during this time.

5. Termination

If you have tried everything else, and the person just will not stop behaving poorly, then termination may be the only option left. This may be slightly uncomfortable. However, if you want your company to thrive, then you need to make sure that you do not keep employees who continue to create behavior problems!
