Leadership in the Digital Age

As with every major historical period, the digital age has created new trends, challenges, and features of society. Along with these changes comes a need for business leaders who can adequately deal with them, and optimize their businesses for the times.

To be an excellent leader in the digital age, a leader must possess some traditional leadership qualities as well as a certain number of leadership traits that cater to the modern era.

Traditional Leadership Qualities

Charisma – Charisma is a leadership quality that is important no matter what the time period is. Charismatic people have a natural ability to draw people’s attention and influence them in a positive way. This can be very important for uniting and inspiring a work force.

Public Speaking – Whether it’s Tim Cook presenting a new Apple product to the world, or your local app company’s CEO speaking at a conference, CEOs and other leaders frequently have to conduct public speaking. People often view the leader of the company as the voice of the brand. As such, it is important for a business’s leader to be able to speak well in public.

Emotional Intelligence – Leaders are responsible for managing other people. Because of this, they need to be able to communicate effectively, and understand the behaviors and needs of their employees. Emotional intelligence is very helpful for these things.

Leadership Traits for the Digital Age

Tech Savviness – As technology has continued to progress, it has become more and more important to a large percentage of businesses. A leader in the digital age does not necessarily need to be a master of technology, but he or she needs to understand how technology influences his or her business, and how to use it properly.

Adaptiveness – Information now flows faster than ever. This means that leaders who are adaptive can respond quickly to change. This can include capitalizing on changing trends, product feedback, new technologies, and other things. Adaptiveness is a great trait for leaders to possess today.

Data-Driven – Companies can now access more data than at any point in the past. Data can be incredibly useful for companies because it can provide insights on everything to customer preferences to the success of pay-per click ads. Increasing amounts of data is a hallmark of the digital age, and leaders who can take advantage of this are more likely to be successful in their industries.

So, to be a successful leader in the digital age, it is not only helpful to possess traditional leadership qualities that can be useful in any time period, but also ones that are especially applicable to the modern era. Do you possess these qualities?
