Scheduling Bodies Vs. Scheduling Skills

When it comes to being an effective manager, it is very important to possess great organizational skills. The reason is because managers are usually responsible for organizing large components of businesses. If a manager can effectively organize these components, then the business can run in an optimized fashion. However, if not, then the business can have efficiency problems, and profits can be lost as a result.

One of the key areas where a manager’s organizational skill comes into play is in employee scheduling. The reason why scheduling is so important is because it can determine whether or not the right personnel are on hand at all necessary times to handle the required work load.

If there are not enough employees at work to handle the required workload, then the business can suffer. Orders can go undelivered, customer service calls can go unanswered, tables can go without being waited on, and many other problems can occur. Of particular importance is whether a manager schedules for bodies, or for skills.

The problem with scheduling for bodies

Scheduling for bodies means making sure that each person on your payroll has a certain amount of hours over a given period of time, such as a week. Although this can be helpful for making sure that all of your employees will get paid, it can create scheduling problems.

The reason is because if you only focus on providing employees with hours, you are not focusing on the needs of the business. A manager with excellent managerial skills will know that at any given point in time during business hours, the business will need to have people who possess certain skills at work to make sure the company can be run.

For example, during work hours, many restaurants will need to have a person who has cooking skills (chef), bartending skills (bartender), serving skills (server), bussing skills (busboy or busgirl), and dish washing skills (dishwasher), at work at minimum, to be able to function. If the manager doesn’t schedule for skills and only schedules for bodies, then personnel with all the required skills may not be scheduled to work when they are needed.

Why scheduling for skills is the better option

Scheduling for skills allows managers to prioritize the optimum functioning of the business. It does this by making sure that people with the required skills are always on hand during business hours to take care of all of the necessary tasks that the business requires to function.

This way, the business never has to suffer due to not having the correct people at work when they are needed. For example, it prevents a restaurant from not having a chef on hand during work hours. Scheduling for skills can also account for peak hours and other differences in demand. For example, if you know you will be experiencing high demand on a certain day, you can schedule more skills on that day.

Scheduling for skills as opposed to scheduling for bodies can help your business to run better, and it can help to increase your organizational and managerial skill.
