Top 3 Sales Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Making sales mistakes can be a serious problem for sales representatives. The reason is because it can lead to decreased sales and decreased commissions. In other words, sales mistakes are harmful for the business, and for the individual salesperson.

Because of this, it is very helpful to know some of the top sales mistakes, and how to avoid them. Here is a list.

1. Talking too much

Obviously, if you are trying to make a sale, you will have to speak with the customer to a certain degree. However, if you bombard him or her with conversation, then it can distract them from focusing on the product. Talking too much can even annoy the customer and can cause him or her to leave the store.

How to avoid

Be helpful to the customers, and answer questions if they ask. However, give them the space they need to engage with the product. You can provide helpful insights or tips if you feel they will help the sale. But don’t overdo it.

2. Lying to the customer

There may occasionally be a temptation to lie to a customer in order to help the sale be made. For example, you may be tempted to tell the customer that your product will last for five years when you know it will only last for three. However, this is not only unethical, but it can backfire majorly if the customer finds out. The customer may never return to your store because if he or she finds out because he or she will have lost trust with your business.

How to avoid

You can avoid making this sales mistake by simply being truthful with your customers. Also, make sure that you are well-versed in all of the true positive aspects of your products so you can use these in the sale instead of having to create fake ones.

3. Selling when it’s already sold

This is another one of the classic sales mistakes that many salespeople make. It involves continuing to try to sell a product or a service after the customer has already agreed to buy it. The issue with doing this is that sometimes you can say something they don’t like after you have already made the sale. Or, you could say something that causes the customer to rethink. Both of these things can lead the customer to change his or her mind about the purchase.

How to avoid

After you have made the sale, just focus on completing the paperwork, or checking the customer out. Do not continue to go on about the virtues of the product. Just do what you need to do to keep the transaction moving to completion.

Following this advice can help you to increase your sales, and to avoid making some of the most common sales mistakes!
